Patient Education: Epidural Steroid Injections
What is an epidural steroid injection and can it help with my pain?
Epidural Steroid Injections (ESIs) are injections into the epidural space that help reduce inflammation of the spinal nerves which cause pain. ESIs can be used to treat localized pain or radicular pain (a sharp pain that shoots from the back or neck down the arms or legs). ESIs can help pain associated with disc herniation, postlamiectomies, nerve impingement, and even postherpetic neuralgia.
Did you know that the first recorded injection of corticosteroids into the epidural space for pain management was in 1952? Since that time, the technique of administering these injections has been perfected. With the help of x-ray guidance, ESIs can be done right in our office, no sedation needed. Patients can experience immediate relief from pain and may not need another injection for years.
Many patients have never tried ESIs and only get pain relief by taking medications. Once these patients realize the benefits of ESIs, a number of them are able to experience activities pain free without medication. We encourage you to call us for an appointment if you feel as if an ESI could benefit you!
